Each year at Wairau Intermediate School, students have the opportunity to trial for our PE Intensive team, after nomination by their teachers based on their sports abilities. This gives students the opportunity to put themselves through a selection process in which they complete a letter of application, participate in a beep test and a 3km run.

These “try outs” are designed to show not only students’ fitness levels, but their commitment to the programme, as well as their specialist sport.  Eleven of these elite students are chosen to form Wairau Intermediate’s PE Intensive Team.

Every Tuesday for 10 weeks during Term 3, these students have the opportunity to learn from some of New Zealand’s top sports people at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.

The course includes:   Motivation and Goal Setting; Fitness Assessments; Nutrition and Sport; Principles of Resistance Training – circuit and weights; Speed and Agility; Aquatic Conditioning and Rehab; Game Intelligence and Balance and Flexibility; Warm Ups and Cool Downs.

This year, the  following students were successful in making the PE Intensive Team:

Alex Lambert, Coco Morikawa, Cameron Crocker, Kenzo Santayana, Tia Langley, Matt Carey, Cody Beale, Tristyn Cook, Awa Ririnui-Ryan, Sarayah Scully, Ethan Holt
