ESOL Programmes
At Wairau Intermediate School we welcome children for whom English is not their first language.On arrival the children are placed in the regular classroom with the support of a kiwi buddy and withdrawn up to 3 times a week for lessons in the ESOL rooms.
Here they receive intensive English learning. Each session lasts for one and a half hours.
The children are grouped according to their abilities and placed in small groups of approximately 8 students.
Their learning takes place in a very supportive environment where they can practice their developing skills of English; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The staff are all experienced fully trained teachers. The school employs a Korean speaking Pastoral Care Officer and other first language speakers as necessary.
